Learn how we downsized from a 1600 sq. ft. home to an 80 sq. ft. bus, embracing minimalist living on the road.
Making the leap from a 1600 sq. ft. home on a quarter-acre lot to an 80 sq. ft. living space in a school bus was no small feat. Downsizing is a buzzword in the minimalist movement, but until you’ve lived through it, it’s hard to grasp just how challenging—and rewarding—it can be.
Why We Chose to Downsize
Before hitting the road, our lives were filled with stuff. We had a house full of furniture, closets overflowing with clothes, a garage packed with tools, and a yard that required constant upkeep. When we decided to embrace the nomadic lifestyle, we knew all of this had to go. Living on the road requires a new kind of freedom—freedom from the burden of unnecessary possessions.
The Downsizing Process: Step by Step
Disposing of Unnecessary Belongings:
The first step in our downsizing journey was assessing what we truly needed. We started with the big items—furniture, appliances, and other large possessions. We held garage sales, listed items online, and donated to local charities. It wasn’t easy letting go of things that had been a part of our lives for years, but we quickly realized that most of what we owned didn’t add value to our lives.
Selling Our Vehicles:
We owned multiple vehicles—a couple of cars, a moped, and a motorcycle. With our new life on the road, we only needed one vehicle: our bus. Selling the others was a major step in simplifying our lives and freeing up funds for our conversion project.
Prioritizing What to Keep:
What remained after our initial purge were items essential to our work and well-being. Our computers, cameras, and work equipment were non-negotiable—they’re our livelihood. We also kept a few sentimental items, clothes suitable for all seasons, and a minimal amount of cooking gear and personal care products. Everything had to serve a purpose, and space was at a premium.
Organizing the Bus:
With limited space, organization became key. We designed storage solutions that maximized every inch of our bus. From under-bed storage to overhead cabinets, every space has a function. Downsizing forced us to think creatively and live intentionally, which has been incredibly freeing.
Living the Minimalist Dream
Downsizing wasn’t just about reducing our physical possessions—it was about changing our mindset. We’ve learned to value experiences over things, to appreciate the freedom that comes with having less, and to find joy in the simplicity of life on the road. Our 80 sq. ft. bus is more than just a home—it’s a testament to our commitment to living life fully and intentionally.
