Follow our seven-month journey converting a school bus into our dream home on wheels, with help from amazing friends.
The decision to convert a school bus into our full-time home was both exhilarating and daunting. We knew it would be a challenge, but we didn’t quite anticipate the scale of the project—or the incredible sense of accomplishment we’d feel at the end of it.
From Demolition to Design
Our journey began with an old, decommissioned school bus. A 2005 Chevy Expressway Cutaway. Stripping it down to its bare bones was the first step—ripping out seats, removing old flooring, and clearing out years of grime and wear. What we were left with was a blank canvas, ready to be transformed into a cozy, functional living space.
Planning and Research: The Foundation of Our Build
What we thought would take a few months ended up taking seven, but every moment was worth it. We spent countless hours researching, planning, and sketching out designs. We wanted to make sure every detail was just right—from the layout to the materials we used. The learning curve was steep, but we were determined to create a space that was uniquely ours.
Building with the Help of Friends
One of the most rewarding aspects of our build was the support we received from friends. Our friend Victor played a pivotal role in helping us with the technical aspects—solar power, plumbing, and other essential systems. His expertise saved us from countless headaches, and we’re forever grateful for his generosity. What started as a two-month project extended into seven months, with us staying at our friends’ home longer than expected. Their kindness and patience made all the difference.
Challenges and Triumphs
Building a bus is a rollercoaster of emotions. There were days when it felt like nothing was going right—materials didn’t fit, the weather wouldn’t cooperate, or a design needed to be scrapped and rethought. But each challenge taught us something valuable, and overcoming them made the final product even sweeter.
The Finished Product: Our Home on Wheels
After seven months of hard work, our bus was finally complete. Every inch of it reflects our vision and the countless hours of labor and love we poured into it. From the cozy sleeping area to the efficient kitchen and the comfortable workspace, our bus is everything we hoped it would be—and more.
This build wasn’t just about creating a home; it was about learning, growing, and proving to ourselves that we could take on something massive and see it through to the end. The result is not just a bus, but a home that we’re proud to live in every day.
